Floors, walls or roofs. Floor panels span bearer-to-bearer reducing the need for joists while providing fast construction, great insulation and a vermin-proof underside.
How are SIPs made and what makes them superior?
Factory-made panels that have solid faces with insulation between. Various combinations of insulation type/surface panels are possible. Panel thickness varies from about 110mm to 310mm. The building needs much less framing, leading to an improvement in insulation. Massive increase in airtightness. The panels are also very airtight, giving a higher insulation value than the tests indicate.
What are the key differences compared to other methods?
Better insulation – the thinnest panel gives better insulation than a standard stick-frame build. With the thicker panels though, we can go many times higher.
More healthy – with the entire house heated and ventilated with fresh air, problems with mould and peeling paint will be a thing of the past. Filtering can be to HEPA grade helping with allergies and removing pollution, while the dry air will help with asthma and other respiratory conditions.
Better airtightness – 10-20 times as airtight as regular construction. To give ventilation, we strongly recommend using a MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit)
Better value – the words cost and value have different meanings. For a well-insulated building, we give both better cost and better value. For a building with standard levels of insulation we have a slightly higher cost but better value – you get a much better building for similar money.
Faster construction – a simple house can have the panels stood in a couple of days. At this point you can be secure from burglars and the weather, as well as reaching that first milestone recognised by the banks.
Stronger building – SIPS panels are incredibly stiff. The bracing is in every wall, not just selected places. All roofs and floors are self-bracing.
